Seven Reasons to Love Your Retro Wardrobes
Whilst the credit crunch has made us frugal, our eco-conscience has also helped us to shun mass, non environmentally-friendly produced flat pack furnishings, both actions which have led us firmly down the path of the older generations in favour of the reusability, durability and downright beauty of older, more traditional pieces. As such, retro wardrobes are really ‘on-trend’ where home-style is concerned and here are seven reasons why: 1. Older wardrobes in a range of traditional woods such as pine, oak and walnut not only offer the warmth of a wood finish but are also offer a strength advantage through traditionally carpentry joints. These are ultimately far superior in quality and strength of joins and corners over their flat pack contemporaries, many of whom do not withstand the rigors of assembly, let alone daily use! 2. Space saving and de-cluttering are contemporary watch words that older wardrobes lend a happy helping hand with! Many Victorian wardrobes offer shelved sections offering valuable space for shelving sweaters, storing stocks or hiding hosiery (some even have their old ‘hosiery’ labels still in situ). 3. Over and above their use as above for clothing storage, older wardrobes of this type are great in kids rooms as the low down shelving can be used to keep favourite toys and games within reach, both avoiding clutter in the bedroom and allowing the kids to be hands on with the clearing away! 4. Despite the cost of genuine ‘antique’ items, solid, older style wardrobes can frequently appear in second hand furniture shops for far less than the price of new wardrobes, making them a frugal furnishing option too. 5. Those wooden wardrobes that are in a poor state of repair are easily dismissed but can be a bargain that shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes all that’s needed is a good going over with sandpaper and wood filler, before re-staining, varnishing or even painting. The ‘shabby chic’ look is very in, so there’s nothing wrong with painting a solid wooden wardrobe in a chic matt paint for an instant new look. Pastels work well for children’s bedroom, neon’s and brights can be startlingly good fun for funky teen furniture, whilst magnolia or egg-shell finishes give contemporary class to an adult bedroom! 6. Retro Wardrobes as part of free-standing bedroom furniture suites offer a much greater flexibility to living space than their built-in buddies! Anytime a change is called for, it’s an easy and far less expensive matter of moving the items around the room for a whole new look or effect. Contrast that with the hard work of disassembling and disposing of built-in robes and shelving! 7. Finally, another useful feature of retro wardrobes is that often these have the traditional lock-and-key closure still intact. This is a great bonus in properties with lodgers (for their own belongings or for the extra security and peace of mind of the homeowner) or where medicines or hobby items need to be securely kept out of sight of children!
